The University of Stirling's archive of film animation pioneer Norman McLaren was the starting point for Now Is the Time, a collaboration between artists Katy Dove and Simon Yuill.
Presented in three forms: live performance, exhibition and web project, Now Is the Time was launched in May 2009 at Tolbooth's experimental music festival Le Weekend with a performance by Muscles of Joy of which Dove is a member.
Whilst developing new material for this performance, the band viewed McLaren's films and used text from letters in the archive as lyrics. Drawings by Dove relating to McLaren's interest in the relationship between sound and image were developed by Yuill to produce a piece of software, through which animated images respond to live sound.
